Starting the New Year with a positive mindset can benefit you in so many ways, helping you to make the most of the year ahead. It will help you become more resilient, more appreciative and better equipped to handle what 2022 brings. While you can’t completely change your mindset overnight, there are small steps you can take to gradually make it more positive.
It’s no surprise that gratitude is on the list, research shows gratitude reduces stress, improves self-esteem, and fosters resilience, even in difficult times. Think of people, moments, or things that bring you some kind of comfort or happiness and try to express your gratitude at least once a day. That could be thanking a co-worker for providing support on a project, or thanking someone for helping you find something in-store. Or you could jot down in your journal a list of things you’re grateful for that you’ve experienced across your day.
Focus on the good things
Whether your day is going well, or you have experienced issues, try to focus on the good things, regardless of how small they may be. This way you will get into a habit of moving into a more positive outlook even if something unfavourable has happened. For example, if someone cancels plans, focus on the free time you now have to unwind and relax, or to complete tasks you’ve been meaning to do.
Surround yourself with positive people
It is helpful to surround yourself with people who also have a positive mindset, or who are working towards one. This way your own personal growth can be shared with and supported by others, providing a support network for all of you. If you are finding that you are spending time with people who bring down your mood, or who project a negative mindset, just be mindful of how this might be impacting on you.
Identify your areas of negativity
Make an effort to identify when you may be using a negative outlook. If you find you are thinking negatively, slow your thinking and decision-making down so you can adopt a more positive outlook, then consider how you should respond to the situation you are in. Also make time to reflect on how your progress is going, if you recognise where you have adopted a negative outlook, think about how a more positive approach could have altered your feelings and decision-making at the time.
Start every day on a positive note
Create a ritual where you start off each day with something uplifting and positive. Here are a few ideas:
Tell yourself that it’s going to be a great day, or any other positive affirmation.
Listen to a happy and positive song or playlist.
Share some positivity by giving a compliment or doing something nice for someone.
How to think positive when everything is going wrong
Trying to be positive when you’re grieving or experiencing other serious distress can seem impossible. During these times, it’s important to take the pressure off yourself. Instead, be kind to yourself, and get support from others, such as family and friends who know you well.
